Fish, aquatic invertebrates, and plants in the trade industry, when released into waterbodies, can have significant ecological, economic, and recreational impacts. Aquarium and horticultural industry represents a key pathway for the introduction of aquatic invasive species into waterbodies in Minnesota and throughout the United States. This project aims to examine stakeholder perspectives about organisms in trade such as aquarium and pond fish (e.g., goldfish), aquatic invertebrates (e.g., crayfish, snails), and aquatic plants (e.g., water lilies). The overall goal of this project is to assess values, beliefs, and prevention behaviors of two key stakeholders in the trade pathway: aquarium and pond-related businesses (i.e., pet stores and water gardens), and aquarium hobbyists. Data will be collected using focus groups with businesses and surveys with hobbyists. Study findings will be used to inform the development and evaluation of communication strategies to promote AIS prevention behaviors in coordination with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Findings will also enhance the understanding of social factors associated with AIS prevention behaviors.
